The Forgiving Highway

About 45,000 Americans are killed each year due to motor vehicle accidents which are caused by roadside obstacles. Highway engineers are making roadways safer by getting rid of roadway obstacles such as putting signs overhead. When this can't be done, barriers are installed so that cars will be shielded from these obstacles upon impact and be funneled down the barrier instead of being thrown back into track, or hitting the barrier.

This video traces the history of the Coquille River Bridge #598 finished August 18, 1922. It was a moveable, swing-span bridge, with a bobtail design. The swing-span pivoted on a 21-foot pier. It was the longest through-span bridge in Oregon, and one of seven swing-span bridges in the state. At a cost of $90,000 to build, log trucks were particularly damaging to the bridge through the years, and the wooden sidewalks on both sides were often broken-through. In 1994 the bridge was dismantled, removed, and stored for historic purposes. A new bridge was completed in 1997.
