Economic downturns are often characterized by an increase in financial fraud and scams. Education and awareness are your best tools to protect yourself and your money. As part of its ongoing effort to help protect Oregonians - particularly seniors - from financial fraud, the Department of Consumer and Business Services has developed several public service announcements that will be airing throughout the state. Any company that offers to help you get out of debt, negotiate with creditors, or fix your credit rating must be registered in Oregon under a new Oregon law. Before hiring a company to help you with your debt, check to see if the company is registered, know what services you are buying, how much they cost, and understand your rights.

State budget cuts cause DCBS office closures

The current recession has reduced state revenues, and has forced the Legislature to make deep cuts. Coping with these cuts includes closing the Department of Consumer and Business Services and most other state agencies on 10 Fridays that fall throughout the current two-year budget period (see link to the list of closure dates below).
