June 4, 2010 Person submitting praise: Sam Likens, SHIBA coordinator Volunteer name: Douglas County SHIBA Team County: Douglas County The dedication each of you has demonstrated for the SHIBA program is quite admirable. You each came to the program for different reasons, but have become our Medicare Team, the face our community sees when they seek Medicare information. The difference you make in the lives of our senior population is incredible. I have worked side by side with you and observed you over the years, and you're strong sense of justice, and desire to assist the confused senior population defines who your are, and why you are here. Thank you for your years of dedication. Sam
May 14, 2010 Person submitting praise: Jean Hockman Volunteer name: Prudence Amick County: Wasco, Sherman, Hood River After retiring from Wasco County, Prudence began working with the CASA program helping children. She contributes between 40 and 60 hours a month doing this, often driving to Portland. In addition, she volunteers 8 - 10 hours a month assisting the Wasco county animal control officer with data entry. She is on the board of directors at the Mid-Columbia Senior Center and is a volunteer at the Senior Center bingo (cashier and concessions). Every week she also drives for the meals on wheels program. Also, she is an AARP Money Management volunteer. Once a month or so, she is out in Sherman County filling in where needed at the Court House. Right now, she is also heavily involved in Elections. Prudence is a most valuable SHIBA volunteer. She is available weekly to help seniors with medicare issues and is always on board during Open Enrollment in the fall. I don't know what we would do without her. She is a blessing! February 23, 2010 Person submitting praise: Dale Baker Volunteer name: Cynthia Hilton County: Marion County I want to sing the praises of Cynthia Hilton. She sloshed through a tangle of problems with my father's Secure Horizons coverage when I had lost all hope. She brought an insensitive bureacratic insurance company to its knees. Yes, she had Secure Horizons personnel actually calling me asking what else they could do for ME. But she didn't stop there. Cynthia also walked me through the time consuming job of picking better coverage for both my parents. Yes, after spending tireless hours working on Dad's problem, she steerd me to new coverage for both my parents, going through all those questions and medication lists TWICE. I also want to praise Cynthia's people skills. No matter how much of her time I took, she never made me feel rushed. Thank you, Cynthia. And thank you fo steering me toward Providence for Mom and Dad. It's working out great. January 18, 2010 Person submitting praise: Sam Likens, SHIBA coordinator Volunteer name: John Paul County: Douglas County John, I praise your independent nature, and appreciate that you have stepped up to assist your community seniors in Reedsport and surrounding areas. The need is great, and you are special.

December 10, 2009 Person submitting praise: Sam Likens Volunteer names: Toni, Terry, Don, and Juanita County: Douglas County The SHIBA open enrollment event at Douglas County Library Dec 9th, ran into a glitch as water pipes broke. I THANK YOU all so much for your patience and the extra kindness you bestowed upon our clients. We are all very fortunate in Douglas County this week is an exception not a norm.
December 7, 2009 Person submitting praise: Verna Pettyjohn Volunteer names: Mildred Fine, John Lessar, Frances Camacho, Dick Day, Vicki Keeney County: Harney County A big Praise to the volunteers of Harney County that are helping beneficiaries at the Senior Center 2 days a week, after hours at home and in the homes of the beneficiaries. What an exuberant bunch that also back me with my low vision.
May 4, 2009 Person submitting praise: Cristy D. Harms, SHIBA Coordinator, Jackson County Oregon Volunteer name: Al Haas County: Jackson Congrats and a big thank you, to Al Haas, volunteer for Jackson County. He’s been with us for a year now and started his SHIBA work right at the beginning of Part D open enrollment period. Al was able to jump right in and begin counseling clients and lending a hand when and wherever needed. He recently designed a poster for our local program and has become a very valuable asset to our group. We appreciate all of your hard work! April 1, 2009 Person submitting praise: Carol Feingold Volunteer name: Karen Burrell County: Linn I just returned from visiting my parents in Albany, Oregon. During the two weeks I was there I was able to switch my mother to a new health insurance policy that not only provides her with much better coverage but also saves my parents approximately $6,000/yr thanks to the help of SHIBA volunteer Karen Burrell. Karen met with us twice and provided us with much needed expertise. She was a delight to work with and helped me through a rather difficult process with charm and good humor. Your agency provides a much-needed service. Thank you very much. January 17, 2009 Person submitting praise: Susan K. Volunteer name: Doreen Stenson County: Washington Doreen was wonderful in helping my mother-in-law. Very kind and patient with someone who needed help. She met several times with her and also with the two of us. Your organization is very helpful in helping to guide all of us through a very confusing and not so user-friendly but necessary government system. Thank you Doreen. January 6, 2009 Person submitting praise: Lee Hager Volunteer name: Bob Earnest County: Multnomah Bob was extremely knowledgeable. He clearly explained a problem that I have been trying to sort out for many months. This was immensely helpful. I greatly appreciate this service. Bob is a great asset to the service! October 29, 2008 Person submitting praise: Martha Anderson Volunteer name: John Block County: Benton County The combination of Mr. Block's expertise as a retired OSU pharmacy professor, his own life experiences, and his SHIBA volunteer training resulted in excellent class sessions for "Medicare 101." I'm learning all this to help my aging mother and Mr. Block made what seemed impossible to understand both understandable and accessible! Thanks so much! April 24, 2008 Person submitting praise: Beth Jackson, SHIBA Administrator for Clatsop, Tillamook, Marion, Polk and Yamhill Counties Volunteer(s) name: Barbara Campbell, Bill Sandhu, and Gretta Bruinsma County: Marion and Yamhill Counties I would like to express my tremendous THANKS to Barbara, Bill and Gretta! As a local SHIBA Volunteer Coordinator, I realize that the SHIBA program would not be where it is without phenomenal, dedicated volunteers! Our SHIBA program is excited to be welcoming many new volunteers in 2008. In 2007 though, we experienced a volunteer shortage.
Barbara, Bill and Gretta really stepped up to the plate to make sure all persons were served. THANK YOU! April 18, 2008 Person submitting praise: Cristy D. Harms, SHIBA Coordinator, Jackson County Oregon Volunteer name: Jackson County SHIBA Volunteers County: Jackson County I cannot single out any one volunteer because they each do a magnificent job, not only with the clients they help, but with one another in the group. Each volunteer uses their own unique way of counseling and is always mindful of sharing their experiences and information with the others to keep the group up to date and informed. When one volunteer is ill or just needs more info to help a client, others are willing to jump in and help and moments notice.
I'm proud to know each of these volunteers and appreciate all they do for our Jackson County community!
